Definition of cybersecurity
Cybersecurity
is the process of protecting systems, networks, computers, and all the software
and data they contain, where they are protected from various types of digital and
cyber-attacks. Ensure that data are inaccessible and prevent any breakthrough.
Concept and uses of "cybersecurity"
Cybersecurity History
The development
of cybersecurity science has gone through several stages during different periods
which we review as follows:
Phase I: 1970s
At that time,
the idea of computers, the Internet, and transferable data was still being
created. Those technologies were primitive and easy to threaten. Therefore,
several attempts were made to penetrate these devices into information,
documentation, and others. Hence there is a need to find protection programs
for sensitive and confidential information.
During this
period, researcher Robert Thomas developed a computer program called Creeper
and Thomas' Creeper program capable of crawling on the Tenex network. The
program is considered the first computer virus developed in this period.
Then inventor
Tom Linson was able to invent another program called Reaper and this program could
go after and delete Creeper so this was the first form of antivirus software.
Phase II: 1980s
After Thomas'
prototype of the virus, many researchers and those interested in developing
more lethal and larger forms of viruses that can penetrate computer software
and networks more broadly, efforts have also been intensified to find
prevention of viruses and develop effective ways to protect against attacks.
During the
1980s several anti-virus programs were developed, the most important of which
was Ultimate Virus Killer, after which inventions continued.
Phase III: 1990s
With the
expansion of the Internet in the 1990s so far and its intervention in various
fields and the increase in the number of users as the Web has become with huge
user databases, some have been encouraged to try to steal users' data for
different purposes.
Thus, as
threats to people and companies increase, serious solutions have been sought to
find a highly effective firewall, as well as to develop more effective
antivirus protection and control programs.
Cybersecurity started
as an independent science in 1972 through the network of advanced research projects
(ARPANET).
Phase 4: Modern Day
Now that since
the first decade of the twenty-first century, efforts have been intensified and
ways of protecting information have evolved, as, of course, the means of threat
have evolved, with professional organizations engaging in cyberattacks and
professional technology.
This has
prompted many governments around the world to develop a unified strategy to
fight and clamp down on these organized gangs for cyberattacks and infringement
of information.
Thus, efforts
have continued and the science of information protection, or what has become
known as cybersecurity has evolved until now, as cyberattacks and hacks
continue, and in the future artificial intelligence technologies may be used to
develop cybersecurity and create an effective mechanism for the total
elimination of any potential cyberattacks.
The importance of cybersecurity
Cybersecurity
offers a range of benefits that help secure and enhance the protection of
information. The importance of cybersecurity is as follows:
- Preserving sensitive data and information and protecting it from theft and penetration
- Cybersecurity provides full protection of all information and data in all its forms and prevents access to it only by authorized persons. Cybersecurity protects information about various facilities such as banks, hospitals, universities, companies, etc.
- Cybersecurity
uses electronic defense software to prevent incidents of theft of information
and data including data and information related to intellectual property,
protected health data and information PHI, and personal identification
information PII.
Action to reduce cybercrime
Cybersecurity
reduces cybercrime as well as reduces cyberattack-related activities. Of
course, advances and dramatic technological development will undoubtedly be
accompanied by an evolution in the means and techniques of cyberattacks.
Fighting viruses and tackling malware
Various
institutions and companies are exposed to various attacks by harmful programs,
aiming to either troll, hack, fraud, or cause damage to data and others.
Cybersecurity helps protect against these programs and works to fight and
eliminate them.
Protect websites and give them credibility
Cybersecurity
protects online platforms and websites from cyberattacks. These attacks may
cause difficulty in accessing websites or hacking and leaking their users'
data, thereby damaging the reputation and credibility of these websites.
Through the
incidents of these attacks, cybersecurity promotes the credibility of websites,
ensures easy access to and safe use of these websites, and prevents any attacks
or attempts to infiltrate these websites, thereby spying on other people's data
and information, or violating the privacy of these websites for various
purposes.
